Mass Audubon Spike 3!

Yay!!!! a new blog! while on our shower run i have internet and time to spare to write! After summer break we got chosen to do an ISP (independent service project) in Baltimore for Extreme Makeover Home Edition! We were supposed to do sheet rock but we ended up just cleaning up clutter. It happened to be the best ISP ever though- they gave us free shirts, all the Monsters you could drink, all the sno cones you could eat, free food from the olive garden AND free Back Massages! It was awesome! This is a picture of Buck & me when it started pouring rain and the other picture is of everyone that got chosen to go.

Then we packed up our gear and drove 7 hours to Massachusetts. We've been here for about a week. We spent 4 days in Wareham where we cleared trails and had our own private beach.
This is a picture before we cleared the trail.
Then we moved to Westport where we're living in tents. No showers- which is why we're at the office showering. And this round we're all aplit up. 3 of my teammates are on stewardship clearing trails and such. 3 others are on youth outreach working with kids. And me and 2 others are on outreach where i work in an office and i go around to events promoting Mass Audubon. Plus I get to work with Becky the volunteer coordinator who is awesome. Its saweet organization where we preserve wildlife. There are lots of trails to clear and theres a public beach to swim in. There's tons of different wildlife all around. This is a picture of the trail that we cleared in Wareham (before we cleared it). The housing in Wareham was awesome. We're going back there to clear trails in 2 weeks. Right now Westport is nice, by the beach anyway. When you are around the forest/farm area (where our housing is) it's horrible. Like I said before, there's no showers. We have a farm house but it's super old and dirty and disgusting so we don't really hang out there. There are millions of mosquitos attacking us wherever we go. It's always a race to unzip the tent and dive in before they get you. The ticks are probably the worse thing. We just got a tour of the trails- not even at the housing site for 3 hours on the first day and I had 10 ticks all over my legs. We were worried about getting lyme disease during first round in Baltimore but we didnt even see one tick when we were there. Now we're freakin out a little bit. I'm just glad I'm on the outreach team and I won't have to work on the trails. There is also poison ivy EVERYWHERE!. Plus everynight it rains like crazy. Usually I'd say YEAH RAIN sooth me to sleep! but this is not that kinda rain. It sound like bullets pelting my tent, and the thunder is pretty loud-not to mention the lightning flashes lighting up the tent every 2 minutes.

I really like Mass Audubon and what they do but we'll see how the housing part goes- so far I'm still alive, we'll see how I feel in a few weeks when we get tested for lyme disease. Ha!

The dogs wanted to say hi and would send you a msg if they could type. they are watching me on the computer!!! I need space! I cant even go to the bathroom without them in the room! lol Well, they miss you!
I hope your tent gets fixed and your housing arrangements get better soon! And hope you don't have to take a shower with a hose or at the public bathroom shower! Just think of it as a vacation camping! Keep up the good work and take it day by day! Make it fun and enjoy the experiences you get, even if it seems difficult now!
Good luck for the ticks! Ill try to find something that they dont like, and TTYL8R!!!

  3. Hey...
So i read some articles and OFF and cutter bug spray work to repell ticks pretty good, but you need to apply it a couple times a day. Also, citranilla oil works too. And they make a soft and easy brand oil.
    So GET SOME SPRAY!

  4. hey guys!
it's not so bad, the first 3 days were a little rough but now i'm getting used to it. my team has bug spray (98% deet) its pretty gnarly stuff but it's super bad for your skin and smells horrible. i haven't been bitten by any other ticks since then but i did kill 4 big ones yesterday. I almost bought a citranella candle but we're not allowed to have candles cuz of "fire hazards" even though we've had a campfire 2 nights in a row. I'll try to post more pictures! as soon as i take some hehe
Give the dogs a hug for me!
